In Karnataka, 3,515 farmers have committed suicide in the past five years

In Karnataka, 3,515 farmers have committed suicide in the last five years from 2013 to 2017, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

2,525 farmers committed suicide due to drought and crop yields in 3,515 farmers committed suicide in the last five years in Karnataka. In the period between April 2015 and April 2017, about 2,514 farmers committed suicide. In the period between April 2017 and November 2017, only 624 farmers committed suicide.

Agriculture Director P Srinivas has said that 1,483 suicides during the 2015-16 period were at least 106 suicides between 2013 and 2013.

Sreenivas said that the number of suicides was the number of sugarcane farmers in the first place, followed by cotton and rice farmers.

He said the compensation amount of Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakhs was paid for the families of farmers who committed suicide.
